Day 1: Arrive in Dar es Salaam

Day 2: Saadani National Park

Transfer to airport and fly to Saadani National Park; game drive en route to lodge.

Days 3-4: Saadani National Park

Two days spent on game drives through the savannah of Saadani National Park, watching for grazing waterbucks, omnipresent warthogs, numerous giraffes, plains zebra and elands; daily river excursions to the mouth of the river and into the Indian Ocean; and optional sunset or walking safaris.

Day 5: Zanzibar

Depart Saadani and fly to Zanzibar; afternoon city tour to colorful, buzzing market where locals barter for fresh vegetables and baskets of tropical fruit; visit the cathedral and former slave market, built in 1874; see residence of the late Sultans of Zanzibar, the Tip Tip House, the Old Fort, Peoples Palace and the House of Wonders; and a stroll through the narrow streets of the old town with time for shopping.

Day 6: Zanzibar

Spend your first full day at leisure, perhaps partaking in low and high-tide activities; booking an appointment at the spa; or learning the art of palm-weaving on sun-drenched Bwejuu beach.

Day 7: Zanzibar

Pay a visit to a Zanzibar spice farm to learn about medicinal, culinary and cosmetic uses for cloves, nutmeg, rambutan, iodine, lemongrass, vanilla and henna, with option to buy and taste fresh spices; and a visit to Marhubi Palace, ruins built by Sultan Said Barghash Bin Said to house his harem.

Day 8: Depart Dar es Salaam
